This article is written by the team that builds Casdoor, so we are not neutral, and we say where we think Casdoor fits and where it doesn't. Auth0 is the default choice for adding login to an app, and for good reason: it is polished, well documented and has an integration for everything. The two complaints we hear most are the bill, which grows with monthly active users and with every enterprise feature, and lock-in, because Auth0 only runs in Okta's cloud.
Here are ten alternatives that fix one or both of those, ranked by how well they work as a replacement for a typical Auth0 setup.
The short version
| # | Alternative | Open source | Self-host | How you pay | Free tier |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Casdoor | Yes (Apache-2.0) | Yes | Flat price per dedicated instance | $20 trial credit; self-host free |
| 2 | Clerk | No | No | Per monthly retained user | 50,000 MRU per app |
| 3 | WorkOS | No | No | Per feature and per connection | AuthKit free to 1M MAU |
| 4 | Keycloak | Yes (Apache-2.0) | Yes | Free; pay for support | Free |
| 5 | FusionAuth | No (free Community edition) | Yes | Plan plus hosting | Community edition |
| 6 | Logto | Yes (MPL-2.0) | Yes | Base fee plus add-ons | 50,000 MAU |
| 7 | Zitadel | Yes (AGPL-3.0) | Yes | Per daily active user | 100 DAU |
| 8 | Supabase Auth | Yes (MIT) | Yes | Part of a Supabase plan | 50,000 MAU |
| 9 | Stytch | No | No | Per MAU | 10,000 MAU |
| 10 | Amazon Cognito | No | No | Per MAU | 10,000 MAU |
For reference, Auth0's free plan covers 25,000 MAU; paid B2C plans start at $35 per month and B2B plans at $150 per month, and enterprise SSO connections, extra MFA options and private cloud deployment are add-ons.
1. Casdoor
Casdoor is an open-source (Apache-2.0) identity platform that covers what most teams use Auth0 for (hosted login pages, social and enterprise login, MFA and passkeys, organizations, a management API) and adds what Auth0 charges extra for or doesn't do: SAML, CAS, LDAP, RADIUS and SCIM, Casbin-based RBAC and ABAC, and OAuth for MCP servers.
The pricing model is the big difference. Casdoor Cloud gives you a dedicated instance and database for a flat price, from $24.17/month billed yearly ($29 month to month), with no per-user or per-MAU fees and no paid add-ons for SSO connections or MFA. New accounts get $20 of free credit. If you would rather run it yourself, the same code is free to self-host, and you can move in either direction.
Pick it if: your Auth0 bill grows with your user count, or you need to self-host for data residency. Look elsewhere if: you need a vendor with SOC 2 or ISO 27001 reports for the hosted service today. See Casdoor vs Auth0 for a full comparison.
2. Clerk
Clerk is the favourite of React and Next.js developers: drop-in components for sign-in, user profiles and organizations that look good out of the box. The free plan covers 50,000 monthly retained users per app, and Pro is $25 per month.
Pick it if: you are building a JavaScript app and want the fastest path to good-looking auth. Look elsewhere if: you need self-hosting, or you sell to enterprises: SSO connections and directory sync are $75 each per month.
3. WorkOS
WorkOS started as enterprise SSO and SCIM for B2B SaaS, and its AuthKit login is free up to one million MAU. You pay for the enterprise pieces: SSO and directory sync connections are $125 each per month, with volume discounts.
Pick it if: you sell to enterprises and want their SSO and SCIM requirements handled. Look elsewhere if: you have many enterprise customers each needing a connection, because the per-connection fee adds up quickly.
4. Keycloak
Keycloak is the established open-source identity server, with OIDC, OAuth 2.0, SAML and LDAP federation. It costs nothing to license, and Red Hat offers support.
Pick it if: you have a platform team that can run and upgrade a Java service. Look elsewhere if: you want someone else to run it. The project has no hosted offering; Casdoor Cloud and third-party Keycloak hosts fill that gap. See Casdoor vs Keycloak.
5. FusionAuth
FusionAuth is a single-tenant auth server you can download and run, or have FusionAuth host. The Community edition is free (but not open source); paid plans start at $162 per month billed yearly, and Essentials and Enterprise start at $2,970 per month.
Pick it if: you want a downloadable, vendor-supported product and have the budget for the paid tiers. Look elsewhere if: open source matters to you, or you want hosting without a large commitment.
6. Logto
Logto is open source (MPL-2.0) with a cloud that includes 50,000 MAU for free and a Pro plan from $24 per month. Developers like its sign-in experience and SDK coverage.
Pick it if: you want an open-source, Auth0-style developer experience for customer login. Look elsewhere if: you need many enterprise features: RBAC, organizations, MFA, enterprise SSO and custom domains are each a monthly add-on in the cloud.
7. Zitadel
Zitadel is an open-source (AGPL-3.0) platform with strong multi-tenancy for B2B SaaS. The cloud is free for 100 daily active users, and Pro is $100 per month with 25,000 DAU.
Pick it if: you are building B2B SaaS with delegated administration per customer. Look elsewhere if: your legal team avoids AGPL software.
8. Supabase Auth
Supabase Auth comes with the Supabase Postgres platform and ties directly into row-level security. The free plan includes 50,000 MAU, and the $25 per month Pro plan includes 100,000.
Pick it if: you already use Supabase for your database. Look elsewhere if: you need SSO for many apps, SAML as an identity provider, or an IAM console for employees.
9. Stytch
Stytch, now part of Twilio, is an API-first platform known for passwordless login and fraud prevention. The first 10,000 MAU are free, then you pay per MAU, and SSO and SCIM connections beyond the first five cost $125 each.
Pick it if: passwordless login and bot protection are your priorities. Look elsewhere if: you want an admin console and hosted pages more than APIs.
10. Amazon Cognito
Amazon Cognito is the low-cost option inside AWS: 10,000 MAU free on its Lite and Essentials tiers, then from $0.0055 per MAU.
Pick it if: you are all-in on AWS and need basic login cheaply. Look elsewhere if: you care about customisation and developer experience, or might leave AWS.
How to migrate off Auth0
Most of the work is the same whichever alternative you choose:
- Export users. Auth0's bulk export gives you profiles; password hashes need a support request. Casdoor can import the hashes so users keep their passwords.
- Recreate applications and connections. Your social, enterprise and database connections become identity providers in the new system.
- Switch apps one at a time. Apps that use standard OpenID Connect only need a new issuer URL, client ID and secret.
- Rebuild Actions. Logic in Auth0 Actions or Rules has to be redone in the new platform's hooks or your own code.
